HTC One Successor (Codenamed M8)

01 Mar

While the Samsung Galaxy S5 box is making its rounds in the sun, giving us a glance of what could be from the Korean powerhouse, its natural rival the HTC One and potential successor is showing some skin of its own. Earlier we saw a leaked image of what the next HTC One (Possibly called the One+) would look like and it more or less confirmed the idea that the the next HTC One (TNHO) would sport dual cameras like early leaks suggested. TNHO will most likely be continuing the Ultrapixel’s legacy with a 4MP rear camera and a standard 2.1MP front facer. It’s said that the biggest change on this front would be on the software side, shedding some light on the “refocus” functionality that has been rumoured to be making a HTC Debut with TNHO. In line with the theme of duality, TNHO will also sport a double flash like the iPhone 5S. While I don’t particularly like the Ultrapixel camera, I have high hopes that the dual lens and dual flash plus improved software will convert me. Processor wise, TNHO will most likely be sporting the Snapdragon 800 despite the fact that the 805 is already out. According to screenshots from benchmarking app AnTuTu, TNHO will have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974AB chip with 2GB of RAM and an Adreno 330 graphics processor (GPU), 16GB of onboard storage and a 5-inch full HD 1080p display. While its not completely up to date, it still is plenty powerful. Display wise, we are looking at a slightly larger screen, but not by much. This leads the speculation that TNHO will not have a dedicated area for capacitive touch, rather it will have an on screen bar, a first in the HTC Family after confusing the masses with the 2 button approach of the HTC One. Leaks of the homescreen have also shown a translucent menu bar at the bottom which plays well with the docked icons, making it in my opinion the prettiest of default launchers. When will we get TNHO ? Reports on Twitter from @evleaks indicate a late march launch for the M8. Let’s hope it won’t take too long to reach our shores. So what do you think ? Will TNHO post a decent challenge to the goliath Samsung devices or will it fall just short this time around like the HTC One vs Galaxy S4? I’m cautiously optimistic for this device and am also keen to see which approach will shine through: Top of the line specs and pushing boundaries in a phone or slight increments and polish from an already great handset. Whatever it is, 2014 is looking to be a great year for phones. 2 weeks-ish to MWC!
